  • No vaccine is 100% effective. They need to test for rabies in case the vaccine doesn’t work properly so they can take extra care to prevent issues. If it comes back negative, fine. If it comes back positive then you need to take extreme care or the person is going to die. I’d rather a squirrel, which someone should have as a pet anyway, die instead of a person. There’s no way that house was ideal for a squirrel unless they lived in a forest.

Edit: reading the information someone else posted, it is 100% effective, but not just with one shot. Several doses need to be administered several days apart. If the test comes back negative, those don’t need to be taken.

  • Yeah, this is basically what I was getting at. Like your Lemmy homepage, it should be managed by your instance, not a central power. Even if they’re perfect for you at first, it creates a thing that can be taken over or purchased without an alternative. Having a federated option makes it so you can find an instance you like or just spin up your own.

Nah man. You’re reading a lot into this. I was adding to the other comment asking what it adds? Does it add anything? Can you actually construct a reason?

I know it’s easier to insult people and pretend like they’re the ones who are being ridiculous rather than doing the hard work of thinking, but it’s childish.

  • Democracy means whoever got the most votes wins (which isn’t how the US works, but that’s a different criticism). It has nothing to do with doing extra work to determine how many votes other people got, as long as they count enough to determine the winner.

I don’t know if you’ve watched shows that have voting or not, but frequently they won’t count all the votes because they counted enough that no one else can win (or lose) based on the current tally and number of votes remaining. Doing anything extra doesn’t help determine the winner. It isn’t their job to do more.

If a law is passed that gives them this requirement, sure they have to do it. It isn’t a requirement for democracy though.

How childish. I’m a white man in the US. It doesn’t offend me. I can understand how it can be offensive though. My critique isn’t valid because I’m offended or not, it’s because I used reasoning. Reasoning is valid, not your feelings about it.

What do you think it added to the conversation? Do you not think perpetuating negative tropes is something that should be avoided?

I agree there should be moderation, but I don’t think there should be a moderator. You should, like Lemmy, be able to join an instance and that instance be able to moderate (or start your own instance). Anything else creates one voice that decides what’s acceptable, and gives you no option except to leave when that doesn’t match your views. You may agree with them at first, but it’s only a matter of time until you don’t.

I don’t know how this service works, but I would hope (and assume) each instance gets to choose if they federated with other instances.

That’s certainly the inspiration, but it’s not particularly good or insightful. It’s really just trying to use a bleak made up stereotype to say something others have said without it. It should add to the conversation, but I don’t think this does that. It doesn’t give me any insight I didn’t already possess, and at best it perpetuates an idea that is wrong, if not outright racist.

Just because you aren’t offended by it and don’t care doesn’t mean critique isn’t valid.

  • As the phrase goes, Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war).

Russia doesn’t care that you want peace. They don’t care how nice you are. They care if they’re going to lose. Putin wants power, and if he is going to lose that power he’ll stop this war. There are many ways to do this, but I’m not opposed to NATO troops helping out. If Russia brings in foreign troops, that’s more than enough justification for NATO to get more directly involved too.

We won’t have peace by asking nicely. We’ll have peace by ensuring an end to the invasion. If Russia wins then they’ll continue. Ukraine winning is the only outcome that can bring peace.

  • What the fuck are you talking about? Do you just want to act like you’re a victim for no reason, while also acting like you have some moral highground?

Of course you can vote third party. I’d still do it strategically, but local is where they can actually win and gain influence. You can also vote in the Democrat and third party primaries (if they have them) to get candidates that suit you better.

Odds are a leftist will run under the Democrat banner, and try to win local primaries, and this is how parties change. They don’t change from presidential elections (usually, Trump arguably did but I’d argue that change was happening for a long time locally first). You need to win local elections and build a power base of enthusiastic voters and experienced politicians (and donors). They usually have to prove themselves locally first, and if you aren’t supporting them then you’re never going to have someone you like in positions of power.

  • The apartment I was last in was several stories tall and, as such, the parking lot was shaded most of the day. Most of the parking spaces were even in a parking garage, so they get no sunlight. If you’re in an apartment, odds are this won’t work for you either.

There are companies working on non-permanent balcony solar though, which isn’t as good as rooftop but still something. That’ll still only work for probably about half of apartments (facing east or west), but it’s inexpensive.

We do need solutions for apartment dwellers, but a solar car probably isn’t it. We need to require a certain amount of availability of electric charging at apartments, and we also need better public transportation options and bike Infrastructure. This is a gimmick solution, not a real solution.
