I’ve been reading Wayne Gretsky’s book “99: Stories of the Game” and this first one is still what blows my little mind.

I know that in the times of the cooper mines population and money was a lot bigger in the U.P. (yoopers still try to claim Calumet was going to be the capital) but that Houghton had pro hockey, the Portage Lakes, before Montreal, Toronto, or New York is just amazing to me.

I know back in the 19th century there was this idea that professionalism made you a lesser athlete, but still. Hougonton?
