The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

Median life expectancy in the US is 79 for women, and 73 for men. So, 30 is more like 38-41% of the way through your life.

Nah, if you make it to 30, your life expectancy goes way up. Life expectancy includes infant deaths and whatnot, so it goes up as you age.

When I look up life expectancy for myself, it projects I’ll live into my 90s.

Life expectancy seems pretty misunderstood, and I used to be one who misunderstood it. Most people don’t know it changes as you age. Your life expectancy at birth is not what it is now, and won’t be what it is if you live 20 more years.
