I’ve see many people mention monero in similar discussion forums many times. As a person who only ever uses cash for most of their transactions besides the ones online, how does one get started in acquiring monero? I have no idea and would like to know if theres reliable/reputable sources for information thats extremely noob friendly or is it a simple process to begin with? Thank you in advance and I can’t wait to learn about this.

Edit: Unrelated to the original question I’m still new to lemmy but I can’t actually see all of the comments for some reason haha

Greetings from our instance monero.town :)

First things first, you do need a wallet to receive, store and send monero. Good options are:

    • official GUI wallet from getmonero.org (PC)
    • cake wallet (android, IOS)
    • monerujo (android)

Second if you do any open source work, consider putting up a donation address. Donating with Monero is easy, cheap and quick, which makes it a nobrainer. Depending on what you do, you might want a separate wallet for that (maximum anonymity), otherwise a sub-account or sub-address give sufficient private for most users.

Finally if you need larger amounts to spend, you need some exchange. The most popular P2P one is localmonero.co, trocador.app is great if you have other crypto already and kraken.com is the best KYC exchange.

Have fun, and feel free to ask any of us if you have any other questions.

If you don’t have a Monero wallet try…

After installing the wallet from getmonero, I went to localmonero.co and located a reputable seller in my country who accepted Amazon gift cards bought with cash.

I then bought an Amazon gift card using cash and kept the reciepts.

I then, as per requirements of the seller, took photos of the gift card number and the receipts to demonstrate the date and the fact I’d paid with cash. After sending these images to my PC I edited them in gimp to remove store identifying info from the receipts image, ran both images through a metadata removal tool and initiated the trade with the seller with the images. They accepted the trade and approx 20mins later the XMR was in my wallet

Out all of the options I feel like this might be the easiest method for people like me haha but it does seem like it comes with a bit of a risk of being scammed but thats why its important to go with a reputable seller. Thank you for your help nonetheless and I’ll probably go this route. Quick question did you add black boxes around the identifying information or just ran a blur over it I’m assuming the seller didn’t give you a hard time over it?
