The state is pissed that they cannot read all your private conversations anymore.

Critics say companies could be required by Ofcom to scan messages on encrypted apps for child sexual abuse material or terrorism content under the new law.

You can really see the slippery slope with these things playing out. Few months ago it was apple locally scanning for images, now there are drafts for laws that would force everyone to do the same. Once you have that, it is trivial to add scanning for different things other than CSAM. “We should scan for messages and images critical of the current government for public safety, we already have it for CSAM” is what follows next.

Yeah it’s getting crazy. Next thing it will be scanning for guns or “misinformation” to put you on some kind of list. Glad to see Signal sticking up to this bullshit, quite a rare sight in today’s industries. I feel at some point though Signal will crack or the gov could do harm to it because it is unfortunately centralized, but I think it will be a while before that happens. They have to boil the frog slowly.

are there decentralized alternatives to Signal? I hope Signal wins this fight, but if they don’t we should start planning

SimpleX has been looking really great, I use it all the time it’s better than Signal technologically and the fact you don’t need a phone number but the app is not as polished yet

dope, I’ll have to take a look at them. I’m a UX designer so maybe I’ll try to see if I can contribute to the polish

Has anybody noticed that signal has quick reply options in it’s notification on android, implying that the client is reading your decrypted messages?

You realize that the client has to read your messages right? Or else you wouldn’t be able to read your own messages?

No. The client has to decrypt and render your messages, that’s wholly different from actually reading, the way you or I would thosee messages. The fact that it is attempting to predict a response to messages you’ve received means it’s parsing the actual sentences through some sort of language model, not just rendering utf-8 characters.
