I still lean towards agreeing with you, but I wonder if “weirdly decent” is just a low bar because of how awful some other media was.
This is why I specificed “for the type of show it is.” gender-bendering/non-conforming stuff being treated uncontroversially “in universe” is a low bar most of its peers didn’t cross if they even bothered to do anything not explicitly cis-het at all. Its also surprising considering it draws from the same well of misogyny as its peers.
Naruto was weirdly decent on gender stuff for the type of show it was.
I think this nonsense assumes it would be just as hurtful to imply someone might be trans as to tell a trans person they are cis. This feels like a “racism against white people kind take at best.”
This struggle session will keep endlessly repeating as long as this site still has reddit demographics. Always has and always will.
