Off-topic: Lemmy really needs better crosspost functionality.
Lemmy is a small group of people, let’s not divide it further by having the exact same conversation in two (or more) places.

Sure, they could block based on your VPN provider, but they’re probably also using Deep Packet Inspection .
The ELI5 verson: It’s possible to just “watch” your traffic and notice that it’s not the “normal” https traffic (which is the most common traffic) . This can be done by finger printing the request itself or just watching the amount of traffic. For example if you “visit” a website, but upload and download 3 megabytes of data and it takes 15 minutes to send/receive that data… well, that looks suspicious… and depending on the country, you may have some people knocking on your door.
Begins?!? Docker Inc was waist deep in enshittification the moment they started rate limiting docker hub, which was nearly 3 or 4 years ago.
This is just another step towards the deep end. Companies that could easily move away from docker hub, did so years ago. The companies that remain struggle to leave and will continue to pay.
All aboard the gold train!
Innevitably whatever public transportation you use the route will end up in the ghetteo.
This is a mindset that many people in the U.S. will need to get over before the “quality” of public transport improves: that busses, trains, subways are for “the poor”.
I’ve been on the subways in New York and busses and trains elsewhere in the States. They’re gross. Especially, compared to most of Europe (Italy, Denmark, Germany, etc). In Asia, they’re also a clean. The mindset in Asia and Europe is “this is what people (not just the poor) take to get from point A to point B”. There aren’t school busses, the kids just take the same city bus/train/subway that all the other people take to get to work.
I’ve spent 45 minutes in the States on my daily commute staring at (and riding on) the bumper of the car in front of me. I’ve also spent 45 minutes, in Europe, peacefully riding the subway to work. I’m able to surf the web, watch a video, relax. I definitely enjoy/recommend the later experience.
Since you asked:
I don’t need a bot to tell me that the BBC is a legit news source. Maybe if you flip it around and only publish a message if it’s a known scammy website, this might be less spammy. However, this “threshold for scamminess” would be very subjective.
Fortunately, most Lemmy clients allow blocking users - which I’ve done and I’m much happier with my Lemmy experience.
Epic gave it away a few months ago.
As others said, it’s heavily story driven (which I found quiet entertaining). The combat had the potential for some strategy, but ultimately I just went with button smashing (it would have been more engaging if there was a meaningful combo system - the one that’s present in the game is kinda awkward)
The big problem, I have with the game, is the game saving bugs. I spent ~20 hours, goofying around, having fun. Defeated “the final boss”…
which ends in a victory lap… Well, that victory lap never completed cause some characters never appeared.
…and I couldn’t find a save game that wasn’t corrupted. So, I just watched YouTube :(
Thanks for the write-up. I think Santa will be bringing me a Firestick Max for Xmas… and I’ve already got a real-Debrid subscription (which I highly recommend). I look forward in trying to plug them together.
I expect to have some website compatibility issues with Firefox/librewolf, as it does have a 3% share of the global browser market - so, website development energy is focused on the chrome/safari experience. However, 8+ years ago I felt I needed to use chrome at least every other day to view certain websites - it was frustrating.
I’m hoping (and willing to try it out) to see if this has improved.
Neato, I’ll check it out. I’m also trying out mull for android (as I’d like to keep my desktop/cellphone bookmarks/browser-history in sync)
Thanks for the comprehensive write-up. It convinced me to migrate back to Firefox.
I was on Firefox (8 years ago), moved to Chrome (I liked the non-admin/transparent update feature and Websites didn’t break like they did with ff), then moved to brave (basically chrome + more privacy), and now I’ll go back the Firefox (I hope I won’t encounter too many non-FF websites)
By the subject of the thread alone, I was thinking “Mortal Kombat 8 and Donkey Kong Racing”.
Hmmm… it adds a new meaning to Scorpion saying *"Get over here! " *

Thank you for the post, but I couldn’t get through the cookie management page to read the article.
Microsoft creates thousands of tons of ewaste for no reason…
Of course there’s a reason, you said it yourself: TPM.
With TPM, Software will be able to cryptographically verify that the OS and Hardware are all unmodified. This’ll be an end to piracy and end to unauthorized modifications to your PC (“We’ve detected that you’ve installed an Ad Blocker, please remove it before accessing your banking website”)
This won’t happen overnight, but the forced hardware upgrade is all about control (Microsoft over you) and creating a walled garden to drive profits (like Apple).
You can take a look at Android’s attestation and how it prevents running your banking apps on a rooted cellphone as an example of things to come.
Before we start to pat ourselves on the back: How does the number of murders in the U. S. compare to the rest of the world? This is really the only meaningful metric, otherwise it’s like a chain smoker congratulating themselves from dropping from 3 packs a day to 2.
*"... there are lies, damn lies, and statistics." *
*edit*: The link I posted referred to a high murder rate for U.S. Virgin Islands (not contential U.S.). So, it's not relevant to the conversation. Thanks for calling me out on it.
You have a valid point, and if your using this service to download dark web “illegal to possess” content (like CP) - then, yeah, you probably don’t want to use it.
However, if you “find” the random movie/tv-show: The copyright holders are usually chasing people who are distributing content (like you do with torrents) as opposed to the people who may accidentally consume the content. … but IANAL
… or you could pay approx $2.70 / month for real Debrid. Replace jellyfin with stremio + torrentio and your family can immediately stream whatever shows they want w/o asking you and without needing to wait for the torrent to download.
The defederation topic and how it impacts me.
I’m an adult, if I find something offensive I’ll either block it or ignore it. However, not giving me the choice offends me and IMHO goes against what Lemmy and the fediverse was suppose to deliver.
I understand (and read) the reason’s why site owners defederate and I view it largely as “Lemmy isn’t mature enough to support more granular blocking - yet”, so I wait patiently and hope this trend towards defederation doesn’t turn into a powertrip by site owners “for the good of their users…”
Welp, I guess this means something bad is gonna happen and Spez is trying to get in front of the inevitable protests.
I wonder what it could be…
