Nah it doesn’t. He is being a dick. You probably can Google that. He missed the point of the entire topic. Nobody was positing how to remove it because this topic wasn’t about that. If someone would have asked about it in the first place people would probably have provided solutions.

It’s about it being annoying or not. Microsoft is in a market position where they can leverage their different departments to heavily upsell you on other services. They have an unfair advantage that shifts the entire market to their favor, thus making it hard for any competitor to keep up or even enter the market.

E.g. they use every service / product they have to integrate Bing, they artificially limit the use of their chat bot to Microsoft Edge, they show Bing advertisements when you visit their competitors sites, they allow you to use Teams for free under certain conditions (if you already bought other products), they use their foot in the door with Microsoft Office / Windows go upsell you on Azure, …, Game Pass, …

I can go on and on. Some of them aren’t necessarily bad on their own. Some are. It paints a pattern of what Microsoft used to be. They actively used their position to try and create market conditions that would break their competitors or make it at least hard for them to even compete. About 15 years ago a lot of folks believed Microsoft had changed and were playing fair (in certain bounds), they invested a lot into open source and were generally a more friendly company. What we are currently witnessing is them going back to their old ways of doing things. Slowly tying everything back together. Probably under the assumption that this time the governments are sleeping and not really regulating it anymore. A lot of that is happening in the somewhat non-regulated cloud market anyways.

But you would still need an authority that can unilaterally make changes to these ownership records. People die, things get lost, stuff happens. So it can’t all be based on signing with private keys of individual persons. At that point: Why not run a central database of it all. It’s cheaper, more efficient and you could still publish a public record for traceability.

I really don’t see any problem that Blockchain could solve better than other solutions. Except Cryptocurrency.

I generally agree. Backups for me are just something I don’t want to tinker with. It’s important to me that they work OOTB, are easy to grasp and I have a good overview.

The web interface is important to me because it gives me that overview from any device I’m currently using without needing to type anything into a terminal. The OOTB is important to me since I want to be able to easily set this all up again even without access to my Ansible setup or previous configuration.

To each their own. I’m not saying your way of doing this is wrong. It’s just not for me. This is just my reasoning / preferences. It’s also the reason something like borg wasn’t my chosen solution, even though it’s generally considered great.

Features that are important to me are things like an easy overview of all backup jobs (ideal via a web UI), snapshots going back every day for a week and after that every month. Backup to providers like Backblaze or AWS and the ability to browse these backups and individual snapshots.

I’d assume that you can build all of this with git annex in some way. But I really want something that works out of the box. E.g. install the backup software give it some things to backup and an B2 bucket and then go.

What I’m curious about is that the git-annex site explicitly days that they aren’t a backup system, but you describe it as such.

Somehow “took me a while to wrap my head around it” doesn’t make me feel comfortable. Apart from git-annex themselves saying that they aren’t a backup system and just a building block to maybe create one, a backup system should imho be dead simple sind easy to understand.

Paid for the web interface as well. I really like that it’s super simple and just does it’s job. That would be the one I’d also recommend.

Look into Veeam. The free version should be enough for this workflow.

I personally don’t derive any value from high quality conversations about topics I don’t care about. That’s why I need these millions of users, so that there are people I can talk with. About topics I care about. I’m willing to go on a limb here an say that your interests and mine don’t fully align.

Not sure if you are joking or not. But at times that’s actually what I think about and sometimes even do. If there is a car with too bright lights coming down the road I’ll turn on the high beams because it reduces my ability to see the road otherwise.

I think if this is what Lemmy is intended for it’s sad and will always a niche thing. I refuse to believe that this is what Lemmy is aiming for.

It’s all about content and diversity. Without a huge number of users you won’t get all these niche communities that one loves Reddit for.

Where is the active plant doctor community? Where are the folks from different professions weighting in with their opinion?

The Fediverse could exist with 5 users. But it would be boring. It just now crossed a threshold where one could hope that if becomes something.

I’m not on lemmy.world, but I’d just like to say that im always sad when I see communities using Discord for communication. It’s the exact opposite of lemmy. And if one considers the current Reddit measures as harsh, they are pretty soft compared to Discords stance on such matters. Information that goes in there is basically lost. So go the entire way with Matrix.
