Semmelweiss is also partially responsible for the widespread rejection of his findings. He basically called doctors who did not follow his advice murderers which naturally didn’t help his popularity. Antagonising someone who you are trying to convince usually just entrenches their opinions further.
I guess for “Flugzeug”, ‘device’ works better but I don’t think I have ever thought about it in that way. From my experience usage usually goes more like this: “Pack dein Zeug zusammen wir gehen weiter.” which I think best translates to ‘Stuff’ or ‘things’. Zeug is an interesting word though. It is also used for the harness of a draft animal (“sich ins Zeug legen”), it’s bridle (“Zaumzeug”), bed linen (“Bettzeug”), work tools (“Werkzeug”) , or as a word for nonsense (“red kein dummes Zeug”). I would say it started, as you said, as a word for device but became a slightly negative word for ‘Stuff’.
The german word for aeroplane is similar, “Flugzeug” directly translates to “flying thing”. Helicopter is also fun, “Hubschrauber” translates to “lifting screwer”.
This fucking thread on HN right now.
OP is an enlightened freelance webdeveloper who is very scared about ghosts from their computer.
“I find myself in a unique position here, as my diverse background and experiences have given me a perspective that allows me to see the potential impact of AI more clearly than large parts of the society I’m living in”
Another poster is also very scared about ghosts from the computer and converted their entire net-worth into NVidia shares. Now that they are heavily invested in a company deeply entangled with ghosts from the computer the apocalypse basically has to happen. After all it couldn’t be that they overreacted.
You can decide that only for yourself so give it a go. Personally, I would categorize it as inoffensive radio friendly alternative rock.
Nobody ever accused powershell of being concise. Its uses a completely different philosophy, object oriented rather than string based. This makes powershell nicer to write scripts in but also makes it worse at bash style one-liner commands.
File search is really awful on windows for no reason at all. Your complaints about commandline utilities is not accurate though.
Windows has native powershell equivalents to both grep
and tail
. You use Select-String
instead of grep
and Get-Content -Wait
instead of tail
.
The videos by suckerpinch are always a treat. I can also highly recommend his video about filesystems that store data in difficult ways, for example by playing Tetris in a NES emulator and using the arrangement of the tetris blocks as data store.
They will boil that frog slowly. Soon there will be an alternative subscription with a discount for previous license holders. Then they hide the option to buy a perpetual license so only people who spent time to search for it can find it; and finally they will remove the option completely and claim that they did that because “Nobody was buying it”.
The business model could change very quickly and promises by companies aren’t worth the paper they are written on. The CEO might tomorrow decide to sell the company to a large tech company which more often than not leads to the destruction of the software the company developed. Only open source or, even better, free software can guarantee that your software wont be enshittified.
For PC gamers Linux is the only alternative but I don’t expect a major migration. The last ten years have shown that the average gamer is willing to accept a lot of hostile behaviour from companies as long as they are able to keep playing their games. Microtransactions, Loot boxes, kernel level anticheat, and broken buggy releases haven’t killed that industry yet. Windows 11 is just another thing that will be loudly complained about in gamer circles but not much will come of it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they introduce another subscription tier at some point that features Ads or worse. Then, at a later date, they will gradually raise prices across the board so the new subscription tier becomes as expensive as the current one.
I guess Roll20s subscriber numbers plateaued and they are now feeling the pressure from dnd beyond. Buying a competitor is probably the fastest way to bolster their customer count.
Honestly that sounds very doable when considering distance alone. With an e-bike you could cut that travel time down considerably. Personally, I think I safe time by cycling to work even if it takes a bit longer on paper because I don’t need to spent time doing any additional workout. I hope the bike infrastructure improves where you live. Commuting by bike is usually much more enjoyable than driving.
Heavens no, that’s disgusting. Use Mayonnaise or ice cream instead.
Even a blind hen sometimes finds a grain of corn.
I remember that series, it was basically Myst but as a learning game. I played a bit of ‘Chemicus’ as a child but also never got far. These games where probably all way to hard for children. I wonder, do learning games even exist anymore? I spent many hours with games like ‘The Mystery of Mathra’.
Now I got the Tivola jingle stuck in my head. My very first PC game was a Tivola game. It seems they really fell from grace in recent years when looking at their website today.
There is also the original ‘original source’. It includes a version of the picture without the labels and the axis flipped.
Neat, but sad to see that it is permissively licensed.
