In the summer of 2021 I spent a week in NYC and visited this sculpture just by chance as it was down the street from my hotel and was near MSG. They were having a big event and the entrance was closed, which I thought at the time was due to the event, only now am I discovering the actual reason.

While I understand the premise of restricting access to mitigate suicides, this seems to be a solution to a symptom and mostly a public perception stop gap. This does not prevent suicide to any significant degree.

If a structure is built for recreation, as a kind of thought exercise, and novel touristic destination and then it’s used as a tool of self destruction by a few people suffering from mental illness, maybe the actual solution is to stop investing in constructing “art” pieces and start investing in solving why someone would want to jump off your sculpture to begin with. After all art is a societies expression of success when all other necessary needs are met, otherwise your art is exploitation.

For those of us who grew up as fans of Coppola’s work, the point isn’t to go watch a movie that is good. It’s to go experience the final work of a man who changed cinema, who was part of the New Hollywood group that challenged the studio system and broke conventions.

This man skirted the line between art house and commercialism for over 50 years while saying fuck you to the status quo. So if he’s going out with a beautiful abstract mess because that’s how he wants to spend his money, screw it I’ll buy a ticket to watch the old man’s final show.

The term “accessibility” is not the exclusive domain of the physically disabled. Accessibility affects all people across race, gender, class, age and disability.

I think there is some confusion here between copyright and patent, similar in concept but legally exclusive. A person can copyright the order and selection of words used to express a recipe, but the recipe itself is not copy, it can however fall under patent law if proven to be unique enough, which is difficult to prove.

So you can technically own the patent to a recipe keeping other companies from selling the product of a recipe, however anyone can make the recipe themselves, if you can acquire it and not resell it. However that recipe can be expressed in many different ways, each having their own copyright.

Tech companies are operated like any other company and have a wide range of employees. Also not every tech position is highly employable. I know from personal experience in tech middle management that many employees are very easy to replace and have very common skill sets that are oversaturated in the market. Many many tech workers are absolutely operating in survival mode in 2024.

Psychopath is being used in a colloquial way here and not an exact diagnosis. Even if they are actual psychopaths they are known for being very charismatic and there are a lot of sadomasochistic people in the world who are motivated by punishment.

Further the people who work directly for these people want to be them, so they see it as just part of the process.

Another factor is money, it’s a motivator. Those who work lower down the org chart can often be desperate, struggling to get by and get used to the punishment, convincing themselves that it would be worse elsewhere.

The Idea that life is short and work just isn’t worth it comes from a place of privilege and the luxury of time for self reflection. Something not everyone can afford when one lives in survival mode.

I think the issue here is there is the rule book and then there is the reality we all live in. Like when you tell an adult as a kid you’re being picked on at school and they say “just tell the teacher”.

Sometimes the situation doesn’t work out in your favor when you play by the rules.

It could be argued that this person feared for her life because the man that was abusing her was caught and now free and he blames her. If he is intent on finding a way to murder her, a restraining order won’t stop him. So in her mind it’s either play by the rules and allow for the potential of having this man murder her at any moment, living with this thought every day of her life or take care of this problem herself and deal with the consequences which is spend time in prison alive or live in fear of death.

I honestly sympathize and understand where this might be less revenge and more pre meditated self preservation.

I was in my early 20s and it definitely was a moment when I realized things weren’t what they seemed. I also fell for the narrative for a bit. Then a couple years later when it was revealed that the WMDs in Iraq were made up it started to all make sense. This country operates the highest, most advanced form of propaganda and corruption. It’s how it stays in power.

I also believe this is what Israel is going through now. Leveraging primal blood lust to justify what being committed. No wonder the US is supportive.

Very true, however that fact seems to support the idea that those who seek wealth are from families who also sought wealth, and it may be, in many cases, that it is a genetic predisposition. Which also supports the idea that it’s possible that this could be a mental illness passed generationally. We just don’t attribute the behavior to mental health due the cultural conditioning that wealth is good.

I mean no one thinks eating, and eating consistently and reliably is bad, but when you see someone eating everything they can get their hands on, most people would agree that’s bad. Obese children are often born into obese families…

I think this is more of a correlation != causation issue. I think it’s more likely that the kinds of people who have the traits to seek obscene wealth also tend to be people with a higher probability for mental health issues.

IMO to be driven to collect as much power and money as possible is harmful to both one’s self and those around you.

I don’t know about that. Her medical issues was like 6 years ago, I think what your seeing is she has matured and has a very different perspective on what’s important in life. She seems happy and doing well, she’s just older and isn’t being as silly and giggly as she was in the beginning.

The smarter version of a dumb idea is still a dumb idea. No one is advocating seriously for any of this because of the obvious flaws.

I was curious if what I had been told had any reference online, a quick search did turn up this post which pretty much says the same:

The arborists work for the power company, because even thought the utility poles are jointly owned the power company has the highest risk so they are responsible for management.

They will always remove the wood from power lines because wood is somewhat conductive, especially when it still fresh because of the water content. Leaving it on a high voltage line can increase the potential for a short. They don’t bother to cut them completely off the telecom lines because there is no risk of shock but a big risk to line damage. If they damage the telecom line they have to pay high fees to the telecom company for repair and risk creating an outage. Also the lines are designed to bear a certain amount of weight, as engineer have accounted for natural burdens like trees, ice and animals.

Also the wood eventually rots after a few seasons and will eventually fall off on its own.

All religion is not about logic or reason, rather it is about identity. You can join a club for scale model trains, and you can join it for the only reason that you want to and because you enjoy it. You then identify as a member of the train club. It becomes part of your identity.

Religion is similar except it adds a dogma and doctrine that defines your entire world view. To lose this world view is to lose your identity. People would rather die than lose their identity because psychologically one’s identity is synonymous with their life.

The only way a person will lose religion is if they have decided for themself that it’s time for change. Much like an addict, it a personal identity change. You have to say to yourself, I am no longer an alcoholic or I am no longer a Mormon. There is no amount of convincing, rationality, evidence or influence that can change a person until they are ready and willing. It’s transformative and traumatic. You just have to accept those who are lost to it.

Most of us grew up with the Trash 80 and C64s and Apples in the classroom, which is why we are drawn to the Fediverse.
