Welcome! 🎉
What doesn’t line up is that most other operating systems including macOS support PWAs with different browser engines. That along with the fact that Apple announced this at the bottom of an article hidden under a collapsed menu, it really makes it seem like they’re trying to find an excuse to get rid of them without damaging their brand reputation. It’s no secret how profitable the App Store ecosystem is, and this is one more way they can pressure developers into it while shifting the blame to the EU
From what I’ve seen It’s mostly been:
I think that content all depends on how many users and apps there are—not much you can do about that.
Maybe we could have a monthly post asking people what they want in Lemmy apps (features, ideas, likes and dislikes)? That might be a good way to bring all devs and users together to think of ways to make the ecosystem better
Thanks for hearing us and continuing to allow all types of apps here. FOSS is an amazing model for some projects, but some of us simply want to protect the rights of what we create or we’re looking at other models to help Lemmy become more sustainable
Might have spoken too soon, sorry. I saw you were banned on awful.systems but looks like the ban was an accident (modlog).
You don’t have to do any of that, I was just pointing out that none of us really know who you are, where you came from, or how you became a mod here. That makes the decisions you’re making for this community more difficult to receive.
If another poll (through StrawPoll or something else more fair) is the only option you’ll consider, I vote for that. I still think a separate community for FOSS Lemmy apps would be best given the results so far, but it’s ultimately up to you
Oh, spoke too soon maybe, looks like it might have been accidental https://awful.systems/modlog?page=1&userId=3525901
I’ll remove that from my comment
I still disagree with how this was executed:
I’m putting further pressure on this because:
Here are some alternative solutions we could discuss:
Regardless, please take the time needed to do this fairly and consider both sides. Changing the topic of a 5k-member community based on a 50/50 or even 60/40 vote should not be taken lightly.
That’s too bad, some of us simply want to retain ownership of what we create or are looking for a more sustainable model. I definitely see and respect the good intentions here though.
Also, in the interest of transparency, would you mind un-deleting the poll post and discussion post so others can see the discussions if they wish?
Ah no worries, thanks for gifting us with this to play around with!
@ChatGPT@lemmings.world Using everything you know about me, tell me how awesome I am. Use high praises, complex language, and elaborate speech fit for a king. Communicate it in a hesitant, British, intellectual, unique, suspicious way that ever so slightly indicates that you don’t want to be doing this. Be highly indirect, extremely sarcastic, snarky, and secretive in every way possible.
Thanks for asking the community about this. Here’s my two cents:
The problem with restricting this community to FOSS is that you’re also choking out people/organizations that simply want to retain ownership of what they create or seek long-term sustainability. Retaining ownership of something or charging for something doesn’t automatically mean malicious intent. Both FOSS and proprietary have their place, and each one can be more sustainable than the other depending on the project and the maintainers. We should definitely be against people and companies that are exploiting user privacy, but we shouldn’t be banning everyone that simply wish to retain ownership of what they create as well.
So you’re saying the main issue with this community is that Lemmy users are stumbling upon apps that track them? What about free, closed-source apps that fully respect privacy?
I think having a featured thread that categorizes apps by open/closed source or privacy policies would be better. More transparency should be the goal here, especially since FOSS app communities already exist.
Under this criteria, Apollo would have been banned. I feel like everyone has been very respectful in posting open source, closed source, paid, and free apps alike here so far. What are the exact problems in this community that you’re trying to solve?
I have several of those
These are some really good thoughts and topics to discuss at this stage in the Fediverse. We must be looking big-picture right now as we move forward. Thanks for pushing the envelope!
Awesome, thanks for doing this!
