  • So the thing about this is that, even if the things wealthy people can deduct means that they rarely pay the 90% marginal tax in practice, the fact that the government is using the tax code to coerce them into doing certain things instead of hoarding their money is still massively beneficial. The current regime abdicates a tremendous degree of the government’s ability to tell the rich what to do with their money, and that is a major contributor to our society’s seeming paralysis with respect to doing things.

Westerners practically froth at the mouth to talk about the mistakes made under Mao, but even with those mistakes the end result of his term was that the Chinese population’s lifespan doubled. Not a lot of world leaders can claim anything like that level of success.

Operation Al-Aqsa Flood came after fifteen years of Gaza being besieged by the IDF. Yes civilians died in it and that’s tragic, but Hamas did not create the conditions under which the operation occurred, Israel did. Hamas does not have the power and the international backing to end this conflict, Israel does. Hamas has not spent seven and a half decades ethnically cleansing Israelis - Israel has spent that time ethnically cleansing Palestinians.

Anything short of support for Hamas is support for genocide.

Yeah the election isn’t the finish line by a long shot. If France wants to defeat the far right then the incoming government condition needs to deliver for working people - paralysis or more neoliberalism will only set the far right up to win the next election.

While it’s great that this election seems to have worked out for French progressives, I think the trend where the French far right does better every election than it did in the last one needs to be addressed by the incoming government, and that their success at doing that will be the true marker of their success overall. If the left-center government is paralyzed and can’t deliver for working French people, then more and more of them will go to the far right, and all this election will have done is kick the fascism can down the road.

Same thing goes for England. It’s great what happened, but the real test is to come.

  • A Leninist would tell you that the “state” is defined by class suppression, so in a truly classless society the “state” ceases to exist and becomes simply the bureaucracy by which the production of society is organized an allocated.

An Anarchist would tell you that communism doesn’t require a centrally planned economy at all, and that small groups that own and control their own means of production are capable of spontaneously organizing at a mass scale and distributing their production without a central authority.
