help-circle

    • Beat my PR in deadlifts! First time in my life I’ve moved that much weight in any context. Hell yeah dude.

    • Swapped the rear cassette and put the summer tires on my nice cool fast bike because most of the snow and ice is gone now. It’s so smooth and fast and fun now. Hell yeah dude.

    • Finally took the time to grind out some right foot bass pedal technique. Drums are too much fun, there’s gotta be some kind of catch or horrible, unforeseen downside to this. Hell yeah dude.

    • Took a couple of weeks off from work because I was starting to burn out a little bit. Feeling a lot better now. Even got paid while I was away. Hell yeah dude.

    • Started working on an old game idea I had a couple of years ago, and it’s going really god damn well. I’m using Godot, it’s quite nice these days, and I am a 100× better programmer now than I was back then so I’m having a blast. It’s gonna be a Mario Kart-esque game about going to the supermarket. Hell yeah dude.

  • Okay so I failed my last weeks goal to make an entire song, but I succeeded in many other ways, so it’s all good!

    • I got a lot of exercise, and “forced” myself to go and do it even when I was feeling like a bag of potatoes after work. I’m sore as fuck today and it rules.
    • Getting back on the lifting train. I used to be able to lift pretty heavy things, but that kind of fell off a little bit after I started working full-time.
    • Finally took the time to learn hi-hat barks. It’s one of those things that I’ve heard a million times but not understood how to do, so it was a major “ooooh so that’s what that sound is!!” moment. Fun.
    • Made a really dope beat in 13/8 (3-3-2-3-2) when I was studying odd time signatures and polyrhythms.
    • Submitted a track to be released on an independent “Various Artists” type compilation. Figured it’ll help me get some external validation and get over some of the self-criticism if it gets released. Means at least one other person thought it was decent, right?
    • Doing well at work, still employed and keeping up the hustle. Landed a project that’s gonna look really fucking sweet on the ol’ CV, too.
    • Smoked more weed 😎

    This week I’ll try to:

    • Flesh out the 13/8 beat into a proper track.
    • Play some more drums and grind some more left-foot technique. Aiming for 60bpm 16ths, where [ 1 e ] are on open hh (accent on 1) and [ & a ] are on closed hh. Move the accent around and switch to [ x x o o ] etc for bonus points.
    • 2x gym. Improve my squat, deadlift, and ohp. Either same weight more reps, or more weight same reps, doesn’t really matter.
    • Leave the house for non-chore matters at least once.

  • This week I think I’ll practice some piano/synth/music theory stuff rather than drums. I’ve gotten pretty got damn rusty.

Goal: Make 1 song using a bunch different synth layers that I actually play and record with mine own two hands (i.e. not clicking around in the DAW piano roll).

    • Make as simple a beat as possible (808, 909?), 4 bar loop is fine, some variations every now and then, some kind of fill every 16th. Really don’t spend too much time on this.
    • Live record a bunch of synths-that-are-not-the-lead (there might be a word for this) on top of it. I’m thinking a pad, a 303 arp thing, and bass tracks.
    • Live record a lead synth/melody straight from the Hydrasynth to the track. Can of course do re-takes if it’s completely fucked, but try not to fuck with it too much.
    • Quick arrangement, quick and dirty mastering, export, done. It does not have to be good, as long as I just make something.

The point is to get more comfortable with imperfections. I tend to rely too much on the DAW to clean up my MIDI tracks, which has kind of made my creativity stagnate. It’s objectively much more fun to just overdub something dope on the fly rather than being a fucking nerd about it and demanding everything to make perfect musical sense at all times. I just want to make something good enough and keep it like that, and then finish up the track before I start analyzing the fun out of it.

I have also come to the unorthodox conclusion that I need to start smoking more weed. I kind of stopped smoking once most of my friends and I got a real, adult jobs, but now I kind of miss it. I can’t exactly remember, but I think I stopped because I was afraid it would fuck with my performance at work or something? Like I valued the job more than getting stoned. I don’t think it was ever mutually exclusive, but whatever, it was probably not a bad idea to lay off the zaza for a while anyway. Now that I have some manner of job security and seniority I think it’s about time to start lighting up every now and then. Looking forward to it.

  • I love arch and I’m incredibly biased, but here goes. I have used Arch exclusively for the past n years. All of the things you’ve mentioned will work great. The AUR absolutely rules. It’s rather similiar to Void in the sense that it’s a completely blank slate, so it’s going to be as unique an experience as you make it.

Arch is really stable and reliable as long as you don’t break it, really. Out of the handful of times I’ve fucked up my install, all of them have been my own fault. Fortunately Arch is (relatively) easy to fix: keep a live USB on hand and chroot into your physical drive with arch-chroot and unfuck whatever needs unfucking. I haven’t ever had to completely start over from scratch a single time. It’s a learning experience!

Go for it, I say. Try it in a VM beforehand if you gotta.

  • I’ve been fucking around a lot with this same stuff on a similar setup (6900XT, sway, M27QP, Arch 6.4 tkg-pds). I managed to make it work more or less flawlessly. Here’s how I did it:

    • I use MANGOHUD=1 gamemoderun %command% in Steam to run my games.

    • When Gamemode runs, it’s configured to enable adaptive_sync, start gpu-screen-recorder, and run a script that sets pp_power_profile_mode to 1 and power_dpm_force_performance_level to high. As @Atemu mentioned, there’s some kind of bug with amdgpu, so by default the power management will be all over the place.

    • The built-in frame limiter in some games (e.g. Apex Legends, Risk of Rain 2) can cause stutter for some reason I don’t understand. V-Sync also had stutter and also caused noticeable input lag. The solution was to use MangoHud’s frame limiter with fps_limit=165 in MangoHud.conf.

    • This patch fixes the mouse move VRR issue. There’s instructions on how to apply it if you scroll down a bit. If it still doesn’t work right, try launching sway with WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1 sway. No need to disable direct scanout either.

Let me know if it works!
